Overview

Job Summary:

The mission of the USGS Geology, Energy & Minerals Science Center (GEMSC) is to assess the nations and the world’s undiscovered energy resources and to investigate the environmental effects of resource extraction. To achieve this mission, the Center’s research program includes long-term and geographically extensive efforts to address large problems through a series of conceptually linked studies. This includes work in a variety of energy basins, and fundamental research related to energy resources and energy-related environmental issues.

Akima Systems Engineering is looking for a Science Technician I to provide geologic technician services for 1) inventorying and archiving several thousand coal and rock samples at GEMSC’s facilities located in Reston, VA.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare inventories of stored coal, rock, and drill core samples and assist in preparing samples for disposal or long-term archiving.

  • Work with GEMSC scientists to prepare and update spreadsheet inventories of stored coal, rock, and drill core samples. The inventories will include such items as sample name, collection date and location, and sample storage location. The samples to be inventoried are stored at GEMSC facilities located in Reston, VA.

  • Prepare coal, rock and drill core samples for disposal or long-term archiving. Using the sample inventories described above (1.a), the contractor will work with USGS scientists to identify which samples should be made ready for disposal, and which should be saved for long-term storage. This will involve opening boxes and sample bags to obtain representative splits of samples to be archived. Sample riffle splitters or cone and quarter methods will be employed to obtain representative samples weighing approximately 200 grams. Excess sample material will be compiled for disposal.

  • Prepare drill core samples for long-term archiving. Using the sample inventories and the sample splits described above (1.a, 1.b), the contractor will work with USGS scientists to prepare core samples for shipment to the USGS Core Research Center located at the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, CO. This will involve completing core sample submittal forms and packaging core boxes on pallets for freight shipment to Denver.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or similar field.

  • Experience in performing simple routine tasks under close supervision or from detailed procedures.

  • Experience in performing simple or routine tasks or tests such as tests; operating and adjusting simple test equipment; records test data.

  • Experience in gathering and maintaining specified records of data.
