Job Summary:

The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Eastern Ecological Science Center (EESC) is to excel in wildlife and natural resource science, providing the information, scientific understanding and technologies needed to support the sound management and conservation of the nation’s biological resources.

The focus of the Center's mission and vision for the future is to continue its dynamic international, national, and regional leadership in wildlife research by generating, interpreting, evaluating, and transmitting the scientific information needed to better address the pressing problems of managing our nation's biological resources, especially those under the stewardship of the Department of the Interior, and other Federal and non-Federal partners. The primary means of gathering this information is through the use of scientific methods applied to monitoring resources and conducting experiments.

Akima Systems Engineering is looking for a Researcher V to compile, process and analyze data for ecological applications. The Researcher V would develop matrix population models, decision support tools, conduct geospatial analyses with programming language R on a on computer as outlined by government technical liaison. They would also conduct data QAQC processes, conduct literature searches, analyze issues, prepare manuscripts, prepare meta-data, write code to process and analyze ecological data, and conduct computer simulations and other analyses. The contractor will be responsible for preliminary interpretation of data, and for summarizing data and presenting results in written reports and for presentations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Compile, process and analyze data for ecological applications.

  • Develop, parameterize, and implement matrix population models and decision support tools.

  • Conduct geospatial analyses with programming language R.

  • Conduct data QAQC processes, conduct literature searches, analyze issues, prepare manuscripts, prepare meta-data, write code to process and analyze ecological data, and conduct computer simulations and other similar analyses.

  • Assist with the analyses of expert elicitation data, and fit probability distributions to these data.

  • Preparation and integration of data and/or analytical results into databases, tables, matrices, and reports.

  • Write scientific manuscript and reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in ecology or related field or a MS degree with 4-6 years of experience.

  • Proven scientific and analytical track record as demonstrated by the scope and depth of scientific publications.

  • Demonstrated efficiency and expertise in the development of matrix population models, analysis of expert elicitation data, implementation of geospatial analyses.

  • Experience with Excel, jags, GIS and R software packages, and the ability to learn new approaches and software.
