Overview

Job Summary:

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Lead analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools. This worker operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. The mechanic welds broken parts and structural members, may direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, and may repair, adjust and maintain mining machinery, such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling and cutting machines, and continuous mining machines.

Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Supervise mechanics in troubleshooting and follow maintenance procedures to determine repair vs. replacement.

  • Perform cross-level maintenance on commercial and military equipment.

  • Manage and distribute daily workload to employees -experience briefing maintenance updates to upper management.

  • Maintain daily employee accountability and report any issues to the supervisor/management.

  • Counsels/coaches employees as required and provides input to upper management.

  • The Lead Mechanic will inspect, annotate, and order repair/service parts for all maintenance requests.

  • Conduct "In-Shop" functions during work order progress to ensure repairs are to standard IAW Technical and Commercial Manuals.

  • Knowledge using GCSS-Army to check parts, labor, and work order statuses.

  • Good interpersonal skills, allowing total focus on solving problems, maintaining confidentiality, and being open-minded to new ideas. Promote a safe work environment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or equivalent with training in equipment maintenance and management procedures at the DS/GS level of heavy equipment maintenance.

  • 3 to 5 years, experience in equipment maintenance at the journeyman level.

  • Commercial experience on Heavy/light vehicles.

  • A minimum of three years’ experience is required in leadership, following policies and procedures, timecards, counseling etc.

  • Must possess and continuously maintain a current State of Colorado Driver’s License prior to start date or by 30 days after employment.

Physical Demands & Working Environment:

  • Work requires extensive standing, bending, stooping, and occasionally working in cramped and awkward positions. Frequently lifts 25 pounds alone and may occasionally assist in the lifting of items and objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Dirt, dust, and grease often present in the work area, as well as occasional exposure to hazardous materials such as fuel, oil, lubricants, and the like, which may mandate the wear of personal protective equipment.

Material & Equipment Directly Used:

  • Hand tools, power tools, job related test equipment such as scanners and computers. Microsoft Office, GCSS-Army, Fed log, IGC or any application which enhances the function of the Maintenance Department. Also used for reference purpose, PWS, QDS, TM’s, TB’s AR’s and DA PAM’s.
