Overview

Job Summary:

The Electrician will support the Project Manager in the execution of the installation, relocation, modification, repair, replacement, testing, and maintenance of all standard voltage electrical systems typically found in a research laboratory environment while adhering to the NEC, UBC, and other applicable codes and sound electrical engineering standards. The position is located at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Western Regional Research Center (WRRC) in Albany, California.

Job Responsibilities

  • Analyzes drawings for the purpose of identifying location of current electrical systems to determine future installations of additional systems, components and/or modifications.

  • Inspects and testing electrical lighting, signal, communication and power circuits and equipment.

  • Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment, using suitable testing instruments.

  • Examines and tests elements of electrical systems to locate obvious faults, such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn motor brushes.

  • Replaces faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, and other simple elements of electrical systems fixtures and appliances.

  • Renews circuits either by isolating and cutting out defective wiring and replacing it with new wiring or by splicing ends of broken wires.

  • As required, estimates materials needed and record time and materials expended on each work order.

  • Conducts routine building inspections to assess needs relating to electrical work and maintenance.

  • Performs daily mechanical inspection rounds in assigned buildings and log critical information.

  • Analyzes work orders and proposed projects for the purpose of determining the feasibility and estimating costs.

  • Coordinates with the Maintenance Supervisor, outside contractors and/or employees, estimators, suppliers, etc., and other trades to complete projects/work orders efficiently.

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and/or replaces component parts (e.g., wiring, conduit, controls, devices, circuit breakers, ballasts, etc.) of various electrical systems, electrical equipment and electrical tools.

  • Schedules and responds to power outages, as required.

  • Installes and/or modifies electrical systems (e.g., building infrastructure, exterior, motor/control, clock, security, fire alarm, energy management, etc.) for the purpose of providing updated, enhanced and/or upgraded electrical capabilities.

  • Prepares written documentation to record and/or convey information.

  • Reports orally to the Maintenance Supervisor on specific projects or problems.

  • Performs all other work-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification:

  • Journeyman level electrician certification.

  • Currently Licensed General Electrician in the State of California.

  • 3+ years of job related experience.

  • Basic knowledge and trouble-shooting principles for electrical, HVAC and mechanical systems.

  • A valid California Driver’s License.

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Ability to effectively communicate in English.

  • Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally.

  • May be required to work hours other than regular schedule such as nights, weekends, holidays, on call, and rotating shifts.

  • Must be a US Citizen with ability to pass a background and drug test.

Physical Demands:

  • Working conditions include potential exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and confined space hazards.

  • Qualified in the use of respiratory protection equipment may be required if part of a permitted confined space entry team or performing tasks with exposure to chemicals, hazardous atmospheres, monitoring, or heavy dust concentrations.
